The Sensex began the day on a shaky note with a negative gap of 10 points at 9638, but soon jumped into positive territory to touch a new, life-time intra-day peak of 9680.The gains were short-lived as the index soon slipped back into the negative zone. Profit-taking saw the index drop to 9571 - down 109 points from the peak. The slide was arrested by some fresh buying in auto and cement stocks. The index once again jumped into positive zone, and thereafter displayed a range-bound movement with a negative bias. The Sensex finally closed with a loss of 30 points at 9618.While the BSE Midcap Index gained 0.2% to 4592, the Smallcap Index lost 0.4% at 6148. The BSE Bankex at 5320 and Auto Index at 4332 gained 0.8% each. The BSE Teck index shed 0.6% at 2478.The market breadth was slightly negative - out of 2,586 stocks traded, 1,098 advanced, 1,428 declined and the rest were unmoved today.Reliance shed nearly 1% at Rs 922 after touching an all-time high of Rs 936. Reliance Energy closed marginally lower at Rs 613.While HLL closed unchanged at Rs 195, ITC declined 1% to Rs 145.Satyam slipped 1.8% to Rs 752. TCS and Wipro dropped over 1% each to Rs 1,726 and Rs 474, respectively. Infosys, however, ended almost flat at Rs 3,055.SBI rallied 2.5% to Rs 941. ICICI Bank declined 1.6% to Rs 604.Grasim surged 2.6% to Rs 1,478. BHEL spurted 1.6% to Rs 1,456.Hero Honda at Rs 869 and Maruti at Rs 672 rallied 1.5% each. Bajaj Auto gained 1% at Rs 2,071. Tata Motors dropped 1.8% to Rs 647.NTPC lost 1% at Rs 114. Bharti Tele and Tata Steel also ended in the red.Hindustan Zinc soared 10.4% to Rs 287. FDC, Andhra Bank, Indian Overseas, Bank of India, Union Bank and Vijaya Bank rallied 6-9% each. Mastek zoomed 9% to Rs 668 after the announcement of board meeting on January 12 to consider a bonus issue.Escorts, Bongaigaon Refineries, EIH, IDBI, Neyveli Lignite, J&K Bank, Gail and Engineers India also finished with significant gains.Titan tumbled over 6% to Rs 796. Merck, VisualSoft, Bombay Dyeing, HCL Infosys, Tamil Nadu Newsprint, Dabur, Century Enka, Geometric Software, Finolex, Mahindra & Mahindra, Balaji Tele, Indo Rama, Ashok Leyland, GTL and Essel Propack ended in the red.Tulip IT topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 211.18 crore followed by SBI (Rs 199.77 crore), Reliance (Rs 193.72 crore), Titan (Rs 172.82 crore) and Satyam (Rs 69.27 crore).Tulip IT topped the volume chart with a volume of around 117.44 lakh shares followed by IFCI (76.41 lakh shares), Gujarat Ambuja (54.42 lakh shares), GV Films (35.59 lakh shares) and Tata Teleservices (29.04 lakh shares).
