Mirroring weakness in the global markets the Sensex opened with a negative gap of 107 points at 10,680. Bears took control thereon and the index kept drifting lower for major part of the trading day.The index touched a low of 10,112 - down 675 points - in mid-noon deals. Thereafter, some buying in the market helped the index erase some of its losses.The Sensex finally ended with a loss of 3.6% (388 points) at 10,399. With this, the index also ended the month on a dismal note - down 13.7% (1,644 points).The FMCG index plunged almost 5% to 1,890. The Bankex and Metal index were down over 4% each at 4,770 and 8,670, respectively. No sectoral index gained today.While the Mid-cap index slipped 2.7% to 5,053, the Small-cap index dropped 4% to 6,364.The market breadth was extremely negative - out of 2,443 stocks traded, 2,016 declined, 386 advanced and 41 were unchanged today.INDEX SHAKERS & MOVERS...ITC slumped 6.5% to Rs 165. ICICI Bank plunged 6% to Rs 536.Tata Steel (Rs 517), ONGC (Rs 1,113), Grasim (Rs 1,773) and Larsen & Toubro (Rs 2,318) dropped over 5% each.Cipla, HDFC, Wipro, TCS, Reliance Energy, Hero Honda, Maruti, Hindalco and Infosys declined 3-5% each.Tata Motors was the sole Sensex stock to finish in the positive zone.OTHER LOSERS & GAINERS...IPCA Labs zoomed over 10% to Rs 318. Aarti Industries, Sundaram Clayton, Asian Hotels, Scandent Solutions, Blue Dart, Unitech, National Peroxide, Indiabulls, Saksoft, Adani Exports and Indo Rama Synthetics were the other major gainers today.Balaji Tele tumbled over 11% to Rs 116. Aztec Software, State Bank of Mysore, KRBL, Ador Welding, Bombay Dyeing, Sterlite Optical, Cadila, Century Textiles, BEML and VisualSoft were the other major losers today.VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERSReliance topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 304.23 crore followed by Tata Steel (Rs 176.73 crore), ACC (Rs 110.08 crore), NTPC (Rs 101.34 crore) and Infosys (Rs 88.47 crore).NTPC led the volume chart with trades of around 90.16 lakh shares followed by Dewan Housing (55.66 lakh), SAIL (50.41 lakh), ITC (49.12 lakh) and IFCI (41.74 lakh).
