The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 16 points at 6,584. After crossing the 6,600-mark in early deals and hitting a high of 6,608, the index drifted into negative zone after the government issued a fresh tsunami warning. The index dipped to a low of 6,507 - a drop of nearly 100 points from the intra-day high - towards the closing bell. The Sensex finally finished with a loss of 45 points at 6,523.While 23 Sensex scrips declined with a volume of 1.07 crore shares totalling Rs 496 crore, seven advanced with a volume of 24 lakh shares for Rs 160 crore.Heavyweights slipped on profit-taking. ITC declined nearly 2% (Rs 25) to Rs 1,296. Infosys was also down Rs 25 at Rs 2,049. Reliance dropped Rs 8 to Rs 523. HLL was marginally lower at Rs 144. Gujarat Ambuja was down Rs 7 at Rs 395. Grasim and ACC also declined.Satyam dropped Rs 10 to Rs 404, and Wipro lost 7 Rs to Rs 746. Hindalco gained more than 2% (Rs 32) to Rs 1,446. Hero Honda was up Rs 7 at Rs 566. BHEL gained Rs 4 to Rs 748. HPCL crossed the Rs 400-mark, and closed with a gain of Rs 2 at Rs 401.Bank scrips logged sharp gains today. SBI was up 2% (Rs 11) at Rs 633. HDFC Bank also advanced 2% (Rs 9) to Rs 521. ING Vysya moved up 6% (Rs 32) to Rs 589. IndusInd Bank gained 6% (Rs 3) to Rs 60. Federal Bank was up 5% to Rs 161. J&K Bank, Dena Bank, Allahabad Bank, PNB, Centurion Bank, UCO, Bank of Punjab, Bank of Maharashtra, Andhra Bank, and Syndicate Bank also closed at higher levels. Select PSU stocks also rallied on fresh buying interest. Concor jumped over 6% (Rs 53) to Rs 935. Neyveli Lignite was up 2% at Rs 73. STC was up 3% at Rs 134. BPCL and Engineers India also moved up.Tech stocks were weak today. TCS declined 1.5% (Rs 20) to Rs 1,298. i-Flex, HCL Tech, Polaris and Patni also closed with losses.Media stocks attracted buying interest. BAG Films zoomed 20% to Rs 14. Shri Adhikari advanced 17% to Rs 111. Cinevista was up 14% at Rs 46. TV Today and TV 18 also finished with gains.Glenmark Pharma was locked at its 10% upper limit at Rs 440 - a gain of Rs 40 - after the company announced that the board will meet to consider a bonus issue.Bharati Shipyard, which was listed today at Rs 130, moved in a range of Rs 109-135 before closing at Rs 129 - a gain of 95% over the offer price of Rs 66 per share.
