The Sensex opened marginally higher (19 points) at 13,176, and touched a high of 13,203 amidst volatility in morning deals.Selling commenced soon after, and the index drifted to lower levels as the day progressed. A heavy bout of selling, particularly in Reliance, saw the index tumble to a low of 12,950 - down 253 points from the day's high - in noon deals.Fresh buying in banking stocks towards the close saw the index recover some ground, and finally close with a loss of 84 points at 13,073.The BSE Mid-cap and Small-cap indices declined 1.2% each to 5497 and 6456, respectively.While the Oil & Gas index slipped 2% to 6141, the Auto index declined 1.7% to 5255. The FMCG and Metal indices were down 1.3% each to 2052 and 9161, respectively.The market breadth was fairly negative - out of 2,594 stocks traded, 1,699 declined, 841 advanced and 54 were unchanged today.INDEX MOVERS & SHAKERSReliance and HDFC dropped 3% each to Rs 1,252 (down Rs 38) and Rs 1,515 (down Rs 45), respectively. Hero Honda tumbled 4% to Rs 713, and Bajaj Auto slipped over 3% to Rs 2,631.Reliance Communications, Tata Motors and ITC shed 2% each to Rs 379, Rs 802 and Rs 185, respectively.Dr.Reddy's and NTPC declined 1.8% each to Rs 778 and Rs 129, respectively.BHEL and Hindalco were down 1.5% each to Rs 2,398 and Rs 188, respectively.SBI advanced 2% to Rs 1,128. ICICI Bank added 1.8% to Rs 783.Wipro and Infosys gained over 1% each to Rs 536 and Rs 2,126, respectively.VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERSReliance topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 282 crore followed by Hindustan Zinc (Rs 164 crore), Jaiprakash Associates (Rs 147 crore), Shyam Telecom (Rs 113 crore) and SBI (Rs 106 crore).IFCI led the volume chart with trades of around 72 lakh shares followed by Shyam Telecom (68.33 lakh), DCB (53.40 lakh), Morepen Labs (38.35 lakh) and Reliance Natural Resources (34 lakh).
