The markets displayed volatility during the trading hours. After opening 12 points lower at 6,094, the index, on extended selling pressure, slipped further to touch an intra-day low of 6,069.The index soon rolled back into the green in mid-morning trades, before profit-taking in select stocks dragged the markets back into lower levels. After exhibiting weakness till early noon trades, sharp upsurge in old and new economy stocks propelled the gains of the index to an intra-day high of 6,174 - up 105 points from the intra-day low.The Sensex finally wrapped up the session with a per cent gain (up 57 pts) at 6,163. The Nifty, too, rallied sharply on all-round buying support, and added 23 points to close at 1,932.Advances outnumbered declines today with 1,351 gainers and 895 losers. While 22 Sensex stocks advanced, 8 declined today. Advancing shares clocked a volume of 1.25 crore amounting to Rs 620.24 crore, and declining shares accounted for a volume of 90 lakh for Rs 415.59 crore.Heavyweights, tech, banking and auto stocks contributed to the gains of the index. ITC and HLL were up a per cent each at Rs 1,359 (up Rs 14) and Rs 149 (up Rs 2), respectively. Reliance, however, slipped a per cent (Rs 5) to Rs 501. The counter clocked a volume of over 63.77 lakh on the BSE.Satyam, on volumes of over 22.26 lakh, flared up 2.76% (Rs 10) to Rs 384. While Wipro gained 1.50% (Rs 10) to Rs 657, Infosys ended with a steady gain of Rs 8 at Rs 1,912.SBI mopped up 1.97% gains (Rs 11) to Rs 582, with volumes of over 9.37 lakh. While HDFC Bank surged nearly 6% (Rs 29) to Rs 519, ICICI Bank, after a mixed outing, was up 1.61% (Rs 5) at Rs 344.Tata Motors moved up 3.36% (Rs 16) to Rs 479. While Maruti, which logged a volume of over 13.16 lakh, advanced 2.68% (Rs 11) to Rs 421, Hero Honda added 1.78% (Rs 9) to Rs 523. Bajaj, however, lost ground owing to selling pressure and dipped 1.72% (Rs 18) to Rs 1,005.Bharti traded in the green for better part of the trading session, and advanced 2.52% (Rs 5) to Rs 203. While BHEL added 1.81% (Rs 12) to Rs 693, HDFC logged 1.38% gains (Rs 10) to Rs 755. L&T, however, ended off-gains at Rs 906 - down Rs 14 or 1.52%.HPCL moved up 3% (Rs 10) to Rs 337. While Tisco, on volumes of over 22.54 lakh, gained 2.11% (Rs 8) to Rs 368, ONGC was up Rs 4 at Rs 782.Cement and pharma majors also largely finished at higher levels. Grasim jumped 1.78% (Rs 22) to Rs 1,280 and Gujarat Ambuja was up Rs 2 at Rs 416. ACC, however, was down a tad at Rs 344.Ranbaxy and Dr. Reddy's were up a per cent each at Rs 984 (up Rs 5) and Rs 732 (up Rs 4), respectively. Cipla, however, ended a per cent lower (Rs 2) at Rs 273.Metal stocks rallied sharply, and the BSE Metal index moved up 2.21% (125 pts) to 5,791. Essar Steel notched up 9.69% gains (Rs 3) to Rs 34. While Hind Zinc spurted 8.58% (Rs 13) to Rs 160, Ispat Industries surged 7.40% to Rs 22. Sterlite Industries and Lloyd Steel advanced 7% each at Rs 608 and Rs 13, respectively. Sail gained 5.85% (Rs 3) to Rs 59. Mukand Steel, Uttam Galvanised, Monnet Ispat and Kirlolskar Ferous moved up in a range of 4-5%.Banking and Capital goods stock, too, ended with impressive gains, with the BSE Bankex rising 2.50% (up 84 pts) to close at 3,439. Andhra Bank soared 10% (Rs 7) to Rs 80, and BoI jumped 7.28% (Rs 5) to Rs 81. Indian Overseas Bank, Canara Bank, Union Bank, OBC and Corporation were up in a range of 1-5%. UTI Bank, however, lost 2.93% to Rs 199, and J&K Bank dipped 2.88% at Rs 312.BEML, on impressive quarterly result, vaulted 8.27% (Rs 24) to Rs 318, while Praj Industries added nearly 5% (Rs 13) to Rs 268. While Honeywell rose 4.72% to Rs 572, Alstom Project was up 2.44% at Rs 134.Select stocks, however, eased on selling pressure. Century Enka dropped 4.20% (Rs 6) to Rs 138, VSNL lost 4% (Rs 8) to Rs 199. While FDC declined 3.84% to Rs 54, Cadila Healthcare slipped 3.65% to Rs 495. CMC, Saw Pipes and RCF were down 3% each at Rs 615, Rs 219 and Rs 35, respectively.Reliance led the value chart with a turnover of Rs 320 crore, followed by Satyam (up Rs 84 crore), Tisco (Rs 81 crore), ITC (Rs 81 crore) and Infosys (Rs 66 crore), respectively.
