Sensex ends up 69pts

The Sensex finally ended (provisional) at 17,579 - up 69 points. The Nifty ended (provisional) at 5,259 - up 25 points.

The Sensex extended gains and touched a high of 17,628. The index is now up 82 points at 17,592.

The Nifty is up 30 points at 5,264.

The markets have perked up in the last few minutes. The Sensex is now up 116 points at 17,626, and the Nifty is up 37 points at 5,271.

The markets continues to exhibit lacklustre movement. The Sensex is now up 70 points at 17,580. The Nifty is up 24 points at 5,258.

The Small-caps and Mid-caps continue to outperform the benchmark index. The Small-cap index has surged 1.3% to 8,947, and the Mid-cap index has added 0.9% to 7,030.

Energy, consumer durables and PSU stocks are the top gainers on the BSE so far.

The market breadth too is fairly positive - out of 2,899 stocks traded so far, 1,963 have advanced, 859 have declined and the rest are unchanged.

Wipro has soared 4.5% to Rs 747. ONGC has surged 3% to Rs 1,231.

Reliance Communications has rallied 2.5% to Rs 180, and Sterlite too has spurted over 2% to Rs 881.

Reliance, ACC and Mahindra & Mahindra are the other major gainers.

Hindustan Unilever has slipped over 2% to Rs 258, and Tata Power has also slipped nearly 2% to Rs 1,462.

HDFC Bank is down over 1% to Rs 1,671.
