The Sensex opened 89 points higher at 8,535 backed by a bounce back in banking stocks. The index, however, could not hold gains for long as it slipped into red to a low of 8,405. The index is now down 10 points at 8,536.
Sterlite has surged nearly 3% to Rs 252. DLF and Tata Motors have rallied around 2% each to Rs 151 and Rs 146, respectively.
Tata Steel and ICICI Bank have moved up 1.6% each to Rs 159 and Rs 289, respectively.
HDFC Bank has advanced 1.3% to Rs 850. Sun Pharma, ACC and SBI are up 1% each at Rs 986, Rs 546 and Rs 967, respectively.
Ranbaxy has plunged 3% to Rs 154. Tata Power has tumbled over 2% to Rs 659.
ONGC and ITC have shed 1.7% each at Rs 653 and Rs 171, respectively.

BHEL and NTPC have dropped around 1.5% each to Rs 1,314 and Rs 177, respectively.
Jaiprakash Associates, Hindustan Unilever and Bharti Airtel are down 1% each at Rs 65, Rs 238 and Rs 595, respectively.
