The Sensex opened with a small gain of four points at 7,192. The index soon breached the 7,200-mark, and moved in a range of 7,210 and 7,230 levels before profit-taking trimmed gains. After dipping to a low of 7,178 in early noon trades, the index soon moved into positive zone. A fresh bout of across-the-board buying towards the closing bell saw the index zoom to a high of 7,283 - up 105 points from the day's low.The Sensex finally snapped the three-day decline with a gain of 84 points to close at 7,272. While 27 index scrips advanced with a volume of over one crore shares totalling Rs 594 crore, three declined with a volume of three lakh shares for Rs 14 crore.The overall market breadth, too, was bullish today. Out of 2,579 scrips traded on the BSE, 1,720 advanced, 804 declined and 55 were unchanged.All the sectoral indices finished with gains. The BSE Tech index advanced over 2% (40 points) to 1,849. The BSE Oil & Gas Index was also up over 2% at 3,391. The BSE Bankex, however, was down nearly a per cent at 4,194.Reliance soared 3.82% (Rs 24) to Rs 667. While Reliance Energy added 1.86% (Rs 12) to Rs 633, ONGC was up Rs 5 at Rs 927.Infosys jumped 2.9% (Rs 62) to Rs 2,195. While TCS moved up 1.93% (Rs 24) to Rs 1,248, Satyam was up a per cent (Rs 4) at Rs 481. Wipro gained 1.13% (Rs 8) to Rs 704.L&T moved up 1.6% (Rs 19) to Rs 1,257, and Tisco was up 1.9% (Rs 7) to Rs 357.Dr. Reddy's added 1.3% (Rs 10) to Rs 748. While Cipla gained 1.7% (Rs 5) to Rs 331, Ranbaxy was up a per cent (Rs 7) at Rs 1,036.HDFC Bank declined 2.2% (Rs 14) to Rs 630, and ICICI Bank lost 1.2% (Rs 5) to Rs 440. SBI, however, clocked a per cent gain (Rs 6) to Rs 718.VSNL jumped 7.64% (Rs 24) to Rs 341. Videocon International added 5.31% (Rs 4) to Rs 79.FMCG scrips notched up significant gains. Shaw Wallace soared 16% (Rs 26) to Rs 190. McDowell advanced 6% (Rs 19) to Rs 322. Britannia, Dabur, Nirma, P&G and Tata Tea also closed at higher levels today.CMC dropped over 7% to Rs 507. Hexaware declined 2% to Rs 103.Bank scrips finished on a weak note. UTI Bank dropped 4% to Rs 252. Centurion, BoB, Canara Bank, Kotak Bank and Dhanalakshmi Bank also declined.Zigma Software topped the volume chart with trades in over 1,.26 crore shares followed by Centurion Bank (84 lakh shares) and Yes Bank (73 lakh shares).Reliance was the most active counter with a turnover of over Rs 188 crore followed by Reliance Capital (Rs 141 crore) and VSNL (Rs 123 crore).
