The dreaded F&O expiry day went off more smoothly than expected, and the benchmark indices - Sensex and Nifty - closed at higher levels today.The Sensex opened with a negative gap of 52 points at 10,520, and soon plunged to a low of 10,275 - down 298 points from its previous close.Steady buying thereafter saw the index move into positive zone by late morning deals. Renewed buying interest in late noon deals saw the index rally to a high of 10,721 - up 446 points from the day's low. The Sensex finally settled with a gain of 93 points at 10,656.The Nifty closed with a gain of 62 points at 3178.The BSE FMCG index rallied 3% to 1,992, and the Metal index gained 2.5% at 8,579. The Teck and Oil & Gas indices were up 1.4% each at 2,483 and 5,166, respectively. The Bankex and Healthcare index, however, dropped 1.5% each to 4,942 and 3,445, respectively.The Mid-cap and Small-cap indices slipped 1% each to 5,034 and 6,390, respectively.The market breadth was fairly negative on the BSE - out of 2,483 stocks traded, 1,523 declined, 905 advanced and 55 were unchanged today.INDEX MOVERS & SHAKERSWipro zoomed nearly 7% to Rs 484. TCS rallied 4.6% to Rs 1,875. Bharti Tele soared over 6% to Rs 393.Tata Steel surged 6.6% to Rs 513. Larsen & Toubro and Reliance were up 1% each at Rs 2,295 and Rs 948, respectively.HLL and ITC gained nearly 4% each to Rs 237 and Rs 181, respectively. ONGC was up 3.3% at Rs 1,204.ACC surged 3.5% to Rs 794. Gujarat Ambuja moved up 1.5% to Rs 96, and Grasim added 1.2% to Rs 1,913.Tata Motors rallied 3.5% to Rs 803, and Hero Honda advanced over 3% to Rs 798. Maruti gained 2.5% at Rs 779.Tata Power tumbled 5.3% to Rs 502. NTPC slipped 1% to Rs 118.BHEL shed 3.6% to Rs 1,901. Bajaj Auto was down nearly 2% at Rs 2,788.Cipla and Ranbaxy declined over 3% each to Rs 223 and Rs 419, respectively.HDFC and ICICI Bank dropped 2.8% each to Rs 1,152 and Rs 557, respectively.OTHER GAINERS & LOSERSMastek, Mahindra Gesco and Bajaj Auto Finance zoomed almost 12% each to Rs 368, Rs 733 and Rs 467, respectively. Classic Diamond, Assam Company, Rane Holdings, Suven Life, Rico Auto, KPIT Cummins, Nagarjuna Fertilisers, Maharashtra Seamless, Gujarat Narmada, Tata Exlsi, BPCL, Crompton Greaves and Indian Overseas were the other major gainers today.Rei Agro plunged over 9% to Rs 109. Godfrey Phillips, Balmer Lawrie, Tantia Constructions, Amar Remedies, Gammon India, Aztec, Bajaj Hindustan, Emkay Share, Proctor & Gamble, Torrent Pharma, Adani Exports, iGate Global, Kotak Bank, Container Corporation, IBP and Engineers India were the other major losers today.VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERSReliance topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 235.66 crore followed by Larsen & Toubro (Rs 131.83 crore), Tata Steel (Rs 100.62 crore), Satyam (Rs 96.62 crore) and Mahindra Gesco (Rs 76.85 crore).SAIL led the volume chart with trades of around 97 lakh shares followed by Reliance Petro (81.25 lakh), G V Films (60.80 lakh), IFCI (36.11 lakh) and Hindalco (30 lakh).
