The BSE Auto index tumbled 1.4% to 5272, and the Bankex declined 1% to 5264. The Capital Goods Index, however, gained 1% at 8128.
The market breadth was extremely negative. Out of 2,597 stocks traded, 1,596 declined, 945 advanced and 56 were unchanged today.
BHEL surged 4% to Rs 2,193. Cipla moved up 2.2% to Rs 602, and Bharti Tele gained 1.7% at Rs 391.
Tata Motors tumbled 3.5% to Rs 906. Bajaj Auto slipped nearly 2% to Rs 2,705. Maruti ended with a loss of 1% at Rs 871.
Wipro shed 2.3% to Rs 531. Satyam slipped 1.7% to Rs 808.
HDFC dropped 2% to Rs 1,311. HDFC Bank declined 1.5% to Rs 753, and ICICI Bank was down 1.3% at Rs 598.
Gujarat Ambuja shed 1.9% to Rs 97. ACC, Ranbaxy and Reliance Energy were down 1% each at Rs 756, Rs 397 and Rs 633, respectively.
Cadila Healthcare soared 9.5% to Rs 650. The company today announced an open offer to acquire 20% equity of Carnation Nutra Analogue Foods for Rs 150 per share.
The board of directors of Reliance Communication Ventures today approved an FCCB issue of up to $500 million. The stock touched a high of Rs 334 before ending unchanged at Rs 320.
Godrej Industries zoomed 14.6% to Rs 645. Bata India, Ganesh Forgings, Goetze India, Texmaco, Teledata, Henkel India and Dwarikesh Sugar, Mastek, Geometric Software and Aurobindo Pharma were the other significant gainers today.
Punj Loyd board today approved an investment of Rs 138 crore in the Delhi-based Global Health. The stock rallied to a high of Rs 1,118 (up 2.3%) in early trades. However, heavy selling towards the end saw the stock plunge to a low of Rs 1,066 before settling with a loss of 1.3% at Rs 1,079.
TTK Prestige slumped 9.5% to Rs 157. Aksh Optifibre, Sunil Hitech, Nocil, Rayban, Zenith, Mangalam Cement, Reliance Natural Resources, VisualSoft, Willamson Tea, McLeod Russel, Aban Loyd, GTL, Hexaware, Escorts and UTI Bank finished with significant losses today.
Debutant Nitco Tiles led the value chart with a turnover of Rs 258.07 crore followed by Reliance Communication Ventures (Rs 243.98 crore), Pratibha (Rs 209.06 crore), BL Kashyap (Rs 158.78 crore) and SBI (Rs 114.78 crore).
Nitco also topped the volume chart with trades of around 1.45 crore shares followed by Pratibha (77.46 lakh), Reliance Communication Ventures (75.86 lakh), SAIL (68.10 lakh) and Reliance Natural Resources (66.37 lakh).
