The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 101 points at 16,908, thanks to Reliance. The index soon touched a high of 16,999, but pared gains owing to profit-taking. The Sensex is now up 64 points at 16,871.
The NSE Nifty touched a high of 5,036 in opening trades, but is now marginally up at 4,990, up five points.
Reliance has surged over 3% in early trades on back of 1:1 bonus issue.
Hindalco has rallied 2.5% to Rs 131, and Tata Steel has added 2% to Rs 528.
ITC has moved up nearly 2% to Rs 249. ONGC has advanced 1.7% to Rs 1,199.
Mahindra & Mahindra, NTPC, Tata Motors, Jaiprakash Associates and Hindustan Unilever are the other prominent gainers.

Bharti Airtel has plunged nearly 4% to Rs 344, and Reliance Communications has tumbled over 3% to Rs 254.
