The Sensex opened with a negative gap of 251 points at 10,284, and touched a low of 10,172 in early trades. The index, although lacklustre, has recovered marginally and is now down 298 points at 10,237.
Hindalco has slumped over 7% to Rs 56. HDFC Bank and ONGC have tumbled nearly 5% each to Rs 1,011 and Rs 843, respectively.
Reliance Communications, DLF and Bharti Airtel have plunged around 4.5% each to Rs 208, Rs 200 and Rs 630, respectively.
ICICI Bank, Sterlite and HDFC have shed around 4% each at Rs 359, Rs 370 and Rs 1,633, respectively.
SBI has dropped 3.7% to Rs 1,087. Mahindra & Mahindra, Reliance and Reliance Infrastructure have slipped around 3.5% each to Rs 450, Rs 1,615 and Rs 592, respectively.
Tata Power, BHEL, Jaiprakash Associates and Infosys are down around 3% each.

Tata Motors has zoomed over 6% to Rs 222.
Ranbaxy has surged nearly 3% to Rs 188, and Sun Pharma has gained 1.7% at Rs 1,087.
The market breadth is positive - out of 2,061 stocks traded so far, 1,169 have advanced, 822 have declined and the rest are unchanged.
