The Sensex opened with a negative gap of 84 points at 10,836. Continued selling in the market saw the index drift lower as the day progressed. The index touched a low of 10,703 - down 217 points from its previous close.Selective buying towards the end saw the index recover some of its lost ground and settle with a loss of 152 points at 10,768.The BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices finished on a rather flat note at 4415 and 5332, respectively.Th BSE Bankex dropped 2.3% to 4399 and the Metal index shed 1.8% to 8595.The market breadth was negative - out of 2,440 stocks traded, 1,367 declined, 982 advanced and 91 were unchanged.INDEX MOVERS & SHAKERSICICI Bank dropped 4.4% to Rs 486. Satyam shed 3.5% to Rs 708.Dr.Reddy's, BHEL and Tata Steel slipped around 3% each to Rs 1,332, Rs 1,913 and Rs 547, respectively.Larsen & Toubro and TCS declined 2.5% each to Rs 2,211 and Rs 1,803, respectively.Hindalco, Hero Honda, Reliance Energy were down over 2% each at Rs 175, Rs 776 and Rs 469, respectively.ITC slipped 1.6% to Rs 182 and Bajaj Auto declined 1.4% to Rs 2,769.Reliance, Wipro, Grasim, NTPC and Maruti were down around 1% each at Rs 1,082, Rs 491, Rs 1,958, Rs 114 and Rs 803, respectively.HDFC advanced over 1% to Rs 1226.VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERSReliance topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 225 crore followed by Tata Steel (Rs 164 crore), Hindustan Zinc (Rs 126 crore), Reliance Capital (Rs 84.85 crore) and Reliance Communications (Rs 68.45 crore).Reliance Natural Resources led the volume chart with trades of around 76.30 lakh shares followed by SAIL (43.11 lakh), Gujarat Ambuja (39 lakh), G V Films (36 lakh) and Tata Steel (30 lakh).
