The Sensex opened almost flat at 13,651, down one point. Fresh buying in the opening trades, in line with a recovery in global markets, saw the index rally to a high of 13,748.Selling emerged in the latter half of the day, and the index slipped into the negative zone. A heavy round of selling towards the end saw the Sensex tumble to a low of 13,493 - down 255 points from the day's high.The Sensex, however, recovered some of its lost ground before settling at 13,566, down 86 points. The index has now dropped 3.2% (449 points) from its all-time closing high recorded on January 3.The market breadth was negative - out of 2,705 stocks traded, 1,390 declined, 1,263 advanced and the rest were unchanged today.DISMAL DEBUTCairn India listed at Rs 140, a discount of 12.5% (Rs 20), on the BSE as against its issue price of Rs 160. The stock spurted to a high of Rs 155, but soon tumbled to a low of Rs 129. The stock finally ended its dismal Day 1 on the BSE at Rs 138. MOVERS & SHAKERSSatyam plunged nearly 4% (Rs 19) to Rs 468. SBI and Reliance Communications dropped around 3% each to Rs 1,174 and Rs 423, respectively.HDFC, Larsen & Toubro and Tata Motors slipped around 2% each to Rs 1,561, Rs 1,431 and Rs 911, respectively.Tata Steel, Dr.Reddy's, Cipla and HDFC Bank dropped around 1.5% each to Rs 456, Rs 799, Rs 244 and Rs 1,013, respectively. Reliance Energy, Maruti, NTPc and Hindalco were the other major losers.Gujarat Ambuja advanced over 2% to Rs 140. ONGC, TCS and ICICI Bank were the other prominent gainers.VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERSDebutant Cairn India topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 445.55 crore followed by Gujarat Ambuja (Rs 315.48 crore), Great Offshore (Rs 177.10 crore), Pyramid Saimira (Rs 174.63 crore) and Reliance Communications (Rs 127.92 crore).Cairn India, also, led the volume chart with trades of around 3.26 crore shares followed by Gujarat Ambuja (2.31 crore), Pentium Infotech (1.03 crore), Harig Cranks (97.45 lakh) and Pyramid Saimira (91.65 lakh).
