The market was extremely volatile in early trades of the opening session today. After resuming three points higher at 6,371, the index registered further gains to touch a high of 6,400, before steep correction in most of the counters saw it slip deep into the red.While the markets displayed a subdued trend till early noon trades due to lacklustre trading, the index tumbled to a low of 6,321 in mid-noon trades as most of the stocks came under the grip of fresh selling pressure. The Sensex, however, bounced back into the green in late trades following buying at lower levels in most of the old economy stocks, and finally ended the session at 6,381 - up 13 points.While 18 Sensex stocks advanced, 12 declined today. Advancing shares registered a volume of 60 lakh for Rs 370.16 crore, and declining shares accounted for a volume of 86 lakh amounting to Rs 399.93 crore.ONGC surged 3% (Rs 25) to Rs 859. While SBI shot up 3.14% (Rs 20) to Rs 661, ITC jumped 1.89% (Rs 24) to Rs 1,300.Reliance, after a mixed outing, slipped a per cent (Rs 6) to Rs 543. HLL closed down a tad at Rs 131.HDFC soared 6.75% (Rs 46) to Rs 735. While Tata Power scaled up 4.92% (Rs 17) to Rs 356, Reliance Energy moved up 1.92% (Rs 10) to Rs 540. Zee gained 2.15% (Rs 3) to Rs 135.Hero Honda advanced 4.91% (Rs 25) to Rs 545. While Maruti added 1.76% (Rs 7) to Rs 419, Bajaj gained a per cent (Rs 10) to Rs 1,030. Tata Motors also ended in the green at Rs 411 - up Rs 3.Infosys (up Rs 3 to Rs 2,169) ended with steady gains. While Wipro lost 1.82% (Rs 12) to Rs 630, Satyam ended marginally weak at Rs 397.Dr. Reddy's and Cipla ended marginally higher at Rs 746 and Rs 252, respectively. Ranbaxy, however, slumped 3.67% (Rs 39) to Rs 1,024.While ICICI Bank declined 1.94% (Rs 8) to Rs 383, HDFC Bank ended a per cent lower (Rs 4) at Rs 533. Bhel dropped 2.85% (Rs 22) to Rs 742, and Tisco was down 1.25% (Rs 5) at Rs 396.All the major sectoral indices closed at higher levels today. The BSE Auto Index moved up 1.9% (48 points) to 2,600. The BSE PSU and the BSE CD indices also gained over 1% today.The board market was extremely bullish with advances outnumbering declines by nearly 3:1. Out of 2,328 scrips traded, 1,686 advanced, 589 declined and 53 were unchanged today.Bulk deals saw M&M top the value chart today with a turnover of Rs 295 crore followed by Reliance (Rs 159.53 crore) and SBI (Rs 159.38 crore).Ispat topped the volume chart with a traded volume of nearly 70 lakh shares followed by M&M (61.58 lakh shares) and SAIL (54.74 lakh shares).
