The Sensex opened with a small positive gap of five points at 8,858, which turned out to be the low for the day. The index crossed the 8,900-mark in early deals, and touched a high of 8,912. After moving in a narrow range for most part of the special trading session, the Sensex finally closed with a gain of 36 points (0.40%) at 8,889.All the sectoral indices largely finished with gains today. The BSE Capital Goods Index zoomed over 3% (166 points) to 5,460. The BSE Healthcare Index advanced 1.5% (46 points) to 3,033. The BSE PSU Index was up 1.2% (58 points) to 5,055. The BSE Consumer Durables, Metal, Oil & Gas, Teck and Auto indices also closed at higher levels today.The BSE Bankex dropped 11 points to 4,839. The BSE FMCG Index was down three points at 1,561.Advances continued to be ahead of declines - out of 2,417 scrips traded, 1,429 moved up, 926 declined and 62 were unchanged today.Tata Power advanced 3% (Rs 13) to Rs 453. Reliance Energy was up 2.7% (Rs 15) at Rs 569, and NTPC was up Rs 3 at Rs 106.BHEL moved up 2.8% (Rs 39) to Rs 1,424. L&T also gained 2.8% (Rs 45) to Rs 1,689.Bharti Tele was up 2.5% (Rs 9) at Rs 373.Ranbaxy closed with a gain of over 2% (Rs 8) at Rs 379. Dr. Reddy's was up Rs 8 at Rs 933.ONGC moved up over a per cent (Rs 10) to Rs 1,030. While SBI was up Rs 4 at Rs 911, Reliance was up a rupee at Rs 845.HDFC Bank declined Rs 6 to Rs 691. ICICI Bank was down Rs 4 at Rs 541. HLL dropped Rs 2 to Rs 185. ACC, Wipro, Satyam and Maruti also declined today.Capital goods scrips continued to log gains. Cummins India zoomed over 7% (Rs 11) to Rs 166. Alstom Projects moved up nearly 7% (Rs 13) to Rs 197. Thermax gained 6% (Rs 52) to Rs 944. Siemens advanced over 5% (Rs 159) to Rs 3,104. Crompton Greaves, BEML and ABB also finished with gains today.MNC pharma scrips also closed with gains. Novartis added 5.9% (Rs 27) to Rs 497. Pfizer moved up 5.8% (Rs 49) to Rs 901. Glaxo gained 5% (Rs 59) to Rs 1,155. Merck was up 4% (Rs 19) at Rs 497.Reliance Capital was the most active counter with a turnover of Rs 61 crore followed by Provogue (Rs 43 crore), SBI (Rs 37 crore), PBA Infrastructure (Rs 36 crore) and VSNL (Rs 32 crore).
