Maruti advanced 2% (Rs 9) to Rs 454. While Hero Honda was up a per cent (Rs 4) at Rs 572, Tata Motors ended marginally higher at Rs 433.
HDFC, however, declined a per cent (Rs 8) to Rs 757, and Tisco lost 1.28% (Rs 5) to Rs 351.
Dr. Reddy's was up a per cent (Rs 6) at Rs 696. While Ranbaxy finished with a modest gain of Rs 3 at Rs 980, Cipla, however, was down a tad at Rs 273.
Shoppers Stop, which got listed on the BSE at Rs 335, soared to an intra-day high of Rs 420 before coming off its highs on profit-taking to close higher at Rs 373. The counter clocked a volume of over 42.22 lakh on the BSE.
Select capital goods stocks firmed up today. Dredging Corporation soared 6.10% (Rs 31) to Rs 537, and HMT jumped 5.85% (Rs 2) to Rs 44. While Fag Bearing advanced 4.22% (Rs 9) to Rs 220, Crompton Greaves gained 3.64% (Rs 17) to Rs 489. Greaves Cotton at Rs 158 (up Rs 5 or 3.50%) also ended with steady gains.
Su-raj Diamond hit the 19.98% circuit breaker at Rs 57 - a gain of Rs 9.
IT stocks, too, notched up strong gains. Geometric Software soared 6.88% (Rs 39) to Rs 603, while Tata Infotech surged 4.93% (Rs 30) to Rs 633. TCS spurted 4.80% (Rs 56) to Rs 1,224, and Aptech was up 4.64% (Rs 2) at Rs 54.
Metal counters, however, shed ground on selling pressure. Southern Iron & Steel tumbled 9.71% (Rs 3) to Rs 28, with Bhushan Steel dipping 4.67% (Rs 9) to Rs 193. While Mukand lost 4.11% (Rs 3) to Rs 73, Uttam Galva declined 3.83% (Rs 2) to Rs 50. Ispat, Hind Zinc, Sail, Tata Sponge, Sesa Goa and Jindal Stainless also ended weak in a range of 2-3%.
Tisco led the value chart with a turnover of Rs 63 crore, followed by Satyam (Rs 60 crore), SBI (Rs 55 crore) and TCS (Rs 48 crore), respectively.
