The Sensex opened with a huge positive gap of 98 points at 7,990, and immediately zoomed to a high of 8,024. The index, however, could not hold gains, and dropped to a low of 7,915 - an intra-session swing of 109 points. The Sensex finally closed with a gain of 52 points at 7,944.All the sectoral indices, too, finished with gains. The BSE Consumer Durables Index advanced 2.7% (63 points) to 2,411. The BSE SmallCap Index gained 2.4% (120 points) to 5,072. The BSE Auto Index was up over 1% (40 points) at 3,455. The BSE Metal, Oil & Gas, Teck, FMCG and PSU indices also closed at higher levels today.Advances were ahead of declines nearly 5:1 - out of 2,282 scrips traded, 1,839 advanced, 391 declined and 52 were unchanged.HDFC Bank advanced 3.3% (Rs 20) to Rs 626. Tata Motors gained 2.5% (Rs 12) to Rs 485. Hindalco moved up 2.6% (Rs 3) to Rs 117. Dr. Reddy's added 2% (Rs 16) to Rs 823. ACC was up 1.5% (Rs 7) at Rs 452. L&T was up Rs 16 at Rs 1,415. Bajaj, Grasim, Maruti and Tata Steel also finished with gains.Infosys gained Rs 11 to Rs 2,535. While TCS added Rs 9 to Rs 1,409, Satyam was up Rs 6 at Rs 612.ONGC added Rs 5 to Rs 934, and Reliance was up Rs 4 at Rs 766. HLL and ITC closed with marginal gains at Rs 163 and Rs 122, respectively. SBI was flat at Rs 838.BHEL declined over a per cent (Rs 12) to Rs 1,122. Hero Honda was down a rupee at Rs 706. ICICI Bank and Ranbaxy also dropped a rupee each to Rs 497 and Rs 350, respectively.BEML zoomed 6% (Rs 45) to Rs 825. Concor advanced 5.6% (Rs 73) to Rs 1,388. RCF was up 5% at Rs 38. HPCL, Chennai Petro and Bongaigaon Refineries also finished with gains.Gillette declined 3% (Rs 18) to Rs 671. IBP was down 2% at Rs 477. Jindal Stainless, Mastek and Torrent Pharma also declined.Reliance was the most active counter with a turnover of Rs 72 crore followed by Titan (Rs 59 crore), Reliance Capital (Rs 56 crore), Suzlon (Rs 29 crore) and Satyam (Rs 28 crore).
