The Sensex has pared most of its gains owing to profit-taking and is now up 59 points at 9,483. The index had earlier rallied to a high of 9,699.
HDFC Bank has zoomed 6.5% to Rs 941, and ICICI Bank has soared over 3% to Rs 358.
BHEL and HDFC have surged nearly 3% each to Rs 1,452 and Rs 1,570, respectively. Mahindra & Mahindra has gained 2.5% at Rs 378.
Bharti Airtel and Wipro have moved up nearly 2% each to Rs 605 and Rs 244, respectively.
Ranbaxy and DLF are up around 1.5% each at Rs 164 and Rs 170, respectively.
Jaiprakash Associates has slumped 5.5% to Rs 80. Reliance Infrastructure has plunged over 4% to Rs 509.

Reliance Communications, Hindalco and Tata Steel have tumbled over 3% each to Rs 163, Rs 50 and Rs 188, respectively.
ONGC and Maruti are down around 2% each at Rs 778 and Rs 720, respectively.
Tata Motors and ACC are down around 1.5% each at Rs 163 and Rs 549, respectively.
The market breadth has turned negative - out of 2,585 stocks traded so far, 1,342 have declined, 1,143 have advanced and the rest are unchanged.
