The Sensex opened up with a positive gap of 44 points at 16,500 on the back of strong cues from US and Asian markets. The index surged to a high of 16,642 and is now up 143 points at 16,598.
The Nifty is up 39 points at 4,931.
Tata Steel has surged 3.6% to Rs 509. Sterlite has gained 2.3% at Rs 761. Reliance Communications and Jaiprakash Associates have added 2% each to Rs 307 and Rs 242, respectively.
SBI has advanced 1.8% to Rs 2,045. DLF, Hindustan Unilever, Mahindra & Mahindra and Reliance Infrastructure have moved up 1.5% each.
The other gainers include ICICI Bank, ACC, Tata Motors and HDFC Bank.
