The Sensex opened with a huge positive gap of 59 points at 11,242. After rallying to higher levels, the index slipped a bit to touch an intra-day low of 11,228.However, continued optimism in the market saw the bulls make a heavy dash towards the end. The Sensex zoomed to a new all-time intra-day high of 11,339 before settling with a huge gain of 1.1% (124 points) at 11,307.The BSE FMCG, Healthcare and Metal indices soared over 2% each to 2225, 3843 and 8738, respectively. The Consumer Durables Index, however, dropped nearly 2% to 3136. While the Smallcap Index rallied 1.6% to 6516, the Midcap Index moved up 1% to 5249.The market breadth was extremely positive for the second consecutive day. Out of 2,535 stocks traded, 1,716 moved up, 757 declined and 62 were unchanged today.INDEX MOVERS & SHAKERSRanbaxy was the major gainer today. The stock soared 10% to Rs 452.Bharti Tele rallied 5.4% to Rs 415. Wipro surged 4% to Rs 564, and TCS added 3.6% to Rs 1,968.ONGC flared up 3.6% to Rs 1,337. HDFC Bank advanced over 3% to Rs 771. ITC (Rs 199), Grasim (Rs 2,039), HLL (Rs 273) and Hindalco (Rs 183) ended with gains of 2-3% each.SBI dropped nearly 2% to Rs 966. NTPC shed 1.6% to Rs 133. Dr.Reddy's and ICICI Bank were down 1% each at Rs 1,410 and Rs 592, respectively.OTHER GAINERS & LOSERSSah Petroleum zoomed 20% to Rs 17.80. SRF, Punjab Alkalies, Titanor, Hindustan Zinc, Sadbhav Engineering, K M Sugar, Indra Gas, Asian Electronics, Bombay Dyeing, RPG Transmission, SAIL, Ramco System and HCL Technologies were the other major gainers today.IVRCL Infrastructure plunged over 7% to Rs 276. State Bank of Mysore, Todays Writing, Mahindra Gesco, Ind-Swift Labs, Supreme Petro, Balmer Lawrie, Geometric Software, Bharat Electronics, Mahindra & Mahindra, Canara Bank, i-flex and Titan were the other prominent losers today.VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERSSatyam topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 176.58 crore followed by HDFC (Rs 155.23 crore), Ranbaxy (Rs 140.66 crore), Grasim (Rs 132.26 crore) and VSNL (Rs 127.90 crore).Essar Shipping led the volume chart with trades of around 2.31 crore shares followed by SAIL (1.27 crore), Mysore Cement (one crore), Reliance Natural Resources (67.31 lakh) and Chemplast (52.13 lakh).
