The combined cash and futures market turnover today touched a record high of over Rs 1.52 lakh crore at the end of trade, soaring by 19 per cent over the previous session even as Sensex fell below the 17,000-level.
The trading volume in the cash market rose to Rs 20,584.76 crore at the end of today's trade from Rs 17,758.66 crore yesterday.
Besides, the futures and options segment volume surged to an all-time high of Rs 1,32,392 crore, compared to the previous session's Rs 1.11 lakh crore.
"There was a lot of activity in the market today. RIL results, Essar Oil block deal and also quarterly figures from corporate saw activities in the sector specific counters in the market thus spurring the volume," SMC Global Vice- President Rajesh Jain said.
Today's F&O volume even surpassed the January average of Rs 60,000 crore.
The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex today ended 191 points down at 16,859.68 points. The National Stock Exchange's Nifty too settled lower by 1.14 per cent at 5,036 points.
