The government has set up a committee with representation from industry associations representing private and cooperative sector sugar companies and exporters to analyse problems faced by the sector.
The committee will have to submit its report within 60 days.
This was announced by food minister Sharad Yadav at the 69th annual general meeting of the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA).
Yadav said creation of a sugar buffer stock of 2 million tonnes would make about Rs 786 crore available to sugar mills to be used exclusively for payment of cane price dues to growers. The buffer would be held for one more year than decided earlier. Disbursement of the buffer subsidy had already started.
Sugar production in the 2003-2004 season might drop from last season's peak. This would lead to reduction of inventories and carrying costs.
Yadav said more sugarcane should be grown to meet demand for a renewable source of energy.
