Sugar prices rose by Rs 11 to Rs 2,836 per quintal in futures trade today as speculators created fresh positions, driven by pick-up in demand in view of the festive season.

At the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange, sugar for delivery in March rose by Rs 11, or 0.39%, to Rs 2,836 per quintal, with an open interest of 37,510 lots.

April sugar traded higher by Rs 11, or 0.38%, to Rs 2,903 per quintal, with an open interest of 38,090 lots.

Analysts said fresh buying by speculators, driven by pick up in demand in view of festive season mainly helped sugar prices to trade higher at futures trade.

They said, however, expectations of higher output, capped the gains.
