Power supply to the three sponge iron units in Raipur industrial area was disconnected for failing to control the emission of dark and black smoke from its chimneys.

The action taken by the power company came after the order of state-run Chhattisgarh Environment Conservation Board (CECB). The three units are located in Siltara and Borjhara industrial areas of Raipur district.

Sources said that the officials of CECB raided the premises of the three industrial units. During investigating, the officials found gross negligence committed by the units in checking pollution. Even the electro-static precipitator (ESP) machines were not in use.

The three units are Corporate Ispat Limited and NR Sponge Private Limited in Siltara and Satyarth Steel and Power Limited in Borjhara industrial area. The officials said that raids would continue against other polluting industries.

The CECB officials ordered to cut the power supply to the three units. Acting on the order, the power company officials today disconnected the power supply that stalled the production in the units.

The action of the board is seen as move taken under mounting pressure from the local villagers, who are up in arms against the polluting units. Sources said that earlier, the villagers had surrounded the three industries threatening direct action. After the intervention of police, the matter was resolved.
