Plastic can be recycled to manufacture new products without adding to environmental pollution using a technology that researchers at Jadavpur University have developed.

Centre for Quality Management System (CQMS), Jadavpur University, has developed the technology anc called it the green recycling process.

The process eliminates air pollution altogether, they said.

Sadhan K Ghosh, the principal investigator of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) funded research project on 'plastic waste management' and coordinator, CQMS, said the purely recycling based process yielded a margin of 50 paise per kg to Rs 2 per kg of plastic granules made from waste plastics.

The processor machine was available in three capacity sizes and have been priced between Rs 3.30 lakh and Rs 5.9 lakh, he added.

Participating in an workshop on 'Setting SSI with green recycling process of waste management' organised by CQMS and CPCB, S Das Chowdhury of the cottage and small-scale department said plastic recycling was ideally suited for small units using locally generated plastic waste.

State governments could act as facilitator between entrepreneurs and banks for loans to fund the units besides helping in awareness creation, he added. CQMS has already started negotiating with two manufacturers for commercially production of the processor machine.

CQMS was also talking to several municipalities to develop a system for collection of waste plastic, dumping and other associated activities under supervision of CQMS.
