The Sensex ended the week with a 203.92 points gain at 4125.12, its best close since March 1, 2001. The Nifty closed at a 29-month high of 1311.15, a gain of 63.40 points over its previous weekend close.
Steel scrips were in vogue at the start of the week. This, coupled with heavy buying support in old economy counters, pushed the Sensex up.
Despite a meltdown in steel counters on Tuesday, the Sensex managed to cross the 4,000 level on Tuesday, thanks to gains elsewhere. Technology scrips joined the rally mid-week leading to more gains.
Late gains in pharma and select heavyweight counters helped the indices close the week on a positive note.
