Urad dal cheaper by Rs 500

A weak trend prevailed as prices of the most of the major foodgrains led by urad dal fell sharply in the wholesale market here during the week ended today.

Price of urad dal, which opened the week at Rs.7,400 per quintal against the previous week close of Rs 7,500, declined further to Rs.7,300 on Tuesday. After recovering by Rs 100 the next day, it slumped by Rs 400 on Friday and closed the week Rs 7,000, netting a loss of Rs 500.

Moong dal opened at Rs.9,000 per quintal, a decline of Rs.200 over the previous week close, and closed at the same rate.

Thoor dal opened Rs 50 lower at Rs.6,900 per quintal and eased to Rs,6,700 on Wednesday. It further slipped to Rs.6,600 on Friday but marginally recovered on Saturday to close at Rs 6,700, a net loss of Rs 250 over its last week's rate.

Both gram dal and sugar dropped by Rs.50 each per quintal to Rs.2,500 and Rs.2,700 from their previous rate of Rs.2,550 and Rs.2,750 respectively. Wheat was the lone gainer as it went up by Rs.50 per quintal to Rs.1,700 over the previous week close.

Maida and sooji (both 90 kg) remained unchanged at Rs 1,650 and Rs 1,750.
