Indian food exporters will have to improve their quality standards in order to export to the United States as the nation will soon have a Country of Origin Labelling (COOL) in place. United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) is also in process of increasing its surveillance of domestic and imported food and animal feed products under the Bio-Terrorism Prevention Act.
The Bio-Terrorism Prevention Act came into effect in September 2002. COOL, which is under trial presently, will become mandatory in 2004 and will look into basic food safety and HACCP, traceability and right of information to consumers.
