Vegetable prices up in rain-hit Gujarat

Prices of vegetables in Gujarat more than doubled in the last one week following heavy rains.
 
"We expect prices will come down in a week," Bhupendrasinh Chaudsama, state minister for agriculture and fisheries told Business Standard on Friday.
 
Onions were sold at Rs 5.30 per kilogramme (kg) from Rs 2.30 last week, and brinjals at Rs 11/kg from Rs 3/kg. Cabbage was at Rs 10/kg from Rs 2/kg, tomato at Rs 13/kg from Rs 7/kg last week and potato at Rs 7.50/kg from Rs 5/kg last week. Green chillis were at Rs 10/kg from Rs 3/kg last week.
 
"It will continue for at least 15 days. If rains continue, prices may increase further, " warned I P Pathak of the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) at Jamalpur.
