The street was abuzz with rumours today... Sebi banning 11 FIIs, ACC considering stock split... And the Sensex gyrated sharply to all talks, whispers and denials...The Sensex, which opened with a huge positive gain of 98 points at 11,845, zoomed to an all-time intra-day high of 11,931 - up 184 points - backed by heavy buying in Infosys in early morning deals.Panic selling in early noon deals amid rumours of Sebi banning 11 foreign institutional investors/brokers from dealing in equity markets saw the index nose-dive to a low of 11,565 - down 366 points from the peak. Following Sebi denial of the so-called rumour, the index recouped all its losses.However, the damage seems to have been done by then for the index swung wildly with a negative bias as investors came to terms with such a huge intra-day drop.A fresh bout of selling towards the close saw the Sensex hit the intra-day low before settling with a huge loss of 157 points at 11,589.Infosys zoomed over 9% to touch an intra-day high of Rs 3,400 on hopes of a bonus issue. However, the stock shed gains as the day progressed, and eventually ended with a gain of 1.7% at Rs 3,166.ACC soared over 9% to a high of Rs 918 amid rumors of a possible stock spilt. The stock pared gains and finished with a gain of nearly 6% at Rs 887 after the company denied the rumours. Grasim rallied nearly 2% to Rs 2,210, and Gujarat Ambuja added 1.2% to Rs 108.BHEL - up over 1% at Rs 2,377 - was the only other notable gainer among the Sensex stocks today.Satyam slumped 4.8% to Rs 817. Wipro tumbled over 3% to Rs 540, and TCS was down over 2% at Rs 1,889. Bharti Tele ended with a loss of 2.4% at Rs 408.Tata Motors dropped 3.7% to Rs 927. Hero Honda slipped 2.6% at Rs 875, and Maruti shed 2.5% to Rs 894. Bajaj Auto was down 1.4% to Rs 2,810.HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank dropped 3.5% each to Rs 812 and Rs 600, respectively. SBI declined 2.8% to Rs 979.Ranbaxy shed 3.4% to Rs 457. Cipla slipped 3% to Rs 723, and Dr.Reddy's was down 1.7% at Rs 1,437.HLL and ITC were down over 2.5% each at Rs 281 and Rs 200, respectively.Reliance Energy declined 1.7% to Rs 619. ONGC and HDFC were down 1% each at Rs 1,277 and Rs 1,340, respectively.OTHER GAINERS & LOSERSGujarat Ambuja Exports zoomed almost 20% to Rs 24.75. Hindustan Zinc, Rane Holdings, Adhunik Metals, Tulip IT, Opto Circuit, Gallan Metals and Coral Labs ended with significant gains of 10-18% each.Shaw Wallace plunged over 9% to Rs 199. Balmer Lawrie, Bombay Burmah, Premier, VST Industries, Nitin Spinners, ABG Heavy, Himachal, Tata Exlsi, Corporation Bank, Alstom Project, Orchid Chemicals, Polaris, Geometric Softtware, Vijaya Bank, Escorts, Federal Bank and Colgate were the other major losers today. VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERSInfosys led the value chart with a turnover of Rs 322.17 crore followed by ACC (Rs 247.46 crore), Satyam (Rs 201.61 crore), Reliance (Rs 154.04 crore) and Hindustan Zinc (Rs 129.02 crore).Adhunik Metals led the volume chart with trades of around 1.82 crore shares followed by G V Films (1.04 crore), Himachal Futuristic (95.28 lakh), Sterling Biotech (76.28 lakh) and Gallan Metals (66.75 lakh).
