The week began on an ominous note with the Sensex hitting the 10% lower limit for the second time in history on Monday. Thereafter, heavy buying by local funds propped up the markets, and the Sensex eventually ended with a loss of 130 points (1.2%) at 10,809. The intra-week swing was a huge 1,316 points - high of 11,143 and low of 9,827.FIIs v/s MFsForeign institutional investors (FIIs) sent mixed signals on Dalal Street. While they pressed the sell button in the cash market, they kept making huge purchases in the derviatives segment.FIIs sold shares to the tune of Rs 5,740.80 crore (gross buying Rs 9,388.70 crore, gross sales Rs 15,129.60) in the first four trading days of the week. On the other hand, they were net buyers of Rs 5,082 crore in the derivatives segment in the same period.Mutual funds made most of the downturn by pumping in Rs 2,507.13 core (gross purchases Rs 4,451.98 crore, gross sales Rs 1,944.85 crore) during the first four days of the week.INDEX MOVERS & SHAKERSONGC was the major dragger on the index shaving off 37 points followed by Larsen & Toubro (26 points), Reliance (22 points), Infosys and HDFC Bank (16 points) each. On the other hand, Tata Steel contributed 22 points and ITC added another 10 points.ONGC was also the top loser among the Sensex stocks - the stock declined 9% to Rs 1,177. HDFC Bank, Larsen & Toubro, Dr.Reddy's and Tata Power were down 5-7% each.Tata Steel surged 7% to Rs 538. ACC, Cipla, Gujarat Ambuja and Reliance Energy moved up 3-6% each.OTHER GAINERS & LOSERSThirumalai Chemicals zoomed over 22% to Rs 162. Unitech, Adlabs, Indian Overseas Bank, Phoenix Lamps, Gujarat Alkalies, TTK Prestige, Shree Ram Mils, Todays Writing, IFCI, Gujarat NRE Coke, Jindal Drilling and Mastek were the other major gainers this week.Alembic Glass, Ansal Infrastructure, Ansal Housing and Hindustan Copper plunged nearly 23% each to Rs 3,135, Rs 689, Rs 300 and Rs 136, respectively. Donear, Reliance Industrial Infrastructure, Coral India, Gruh Finance, Jolly Boards, D S Kulkarni, Provogue, Welcast Steels, Milkfood, Alchemist and Dabur were the other significant losers this week.
