Land Rover will be introducing the new Discovery Sport by mid-2015 and it will be taking the CKD route to India. The Discovery Sport will be assembled at Tata Motors' Pimpri plant. This is the new member of the Discovery family and will be placed below the Discovery 4.
The Discovery Sport will be sold with three engine options, the 2.2-litre diesel will be sold with TD4- 148bhp and 400Nm version- and even the SD4, which is the 187bhp and 420Nm version of the same engine. The third engine variant is the 2.0-litre petrol, which produces 238bhp and 340Nm. All these will come mated to a nine-speed ZF transmission.
The Discovery Sport is a seven-seater and should replace Freelander2. This SUV is based on the new Discovery platform and all the new Discovery models will now be based on this new platform. Previously, even the Range Rover Sport was made on the Discovery, until the new one was developed on Range Rover platform.
A host of innovations have allowed Discovery Sport to introduce the versatility of 5+2 seating into the premium compact SUV class for the first time. An all-new multi-link rear axle not only provides engaging driving dynamics but it also provides ample and flexible cabin space behind the second row. It also gets all-new eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and standard tilt-and-slide row-two seating for maximum interior configurability.
The pricing of the Discovery Sport will be between Rs 55-65 lakhs (on-road). This SUV will be competing with Mercedes-Benz ML-Class, Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Volvo XC 60. There should be three variants, SE, HSE and HSE Luxury.
