Audi had launched the facelift of the RS7 last year. The facelift has got upgrades which are mainly cosmetic in nature along with an improved driver interface. The engine remains the same devastating mill. The RS7 can be best defined as a blend of style, elegance and of course, insanity. Yes, I cant think of a better word to describe this sportback which can urge even the most composed drivers to go insane. We take the RS7 for a spin on the Yamuna Expressway and explore its depths.

The Audi RS7 is a looker no doubt. With a typical Audi front front face that has a large grille (larger than the previous model) that covers most of the front end. The sharply designed headlamps are exquisite. Now what has changed in the facelift are the new set of headlamps that come with new LED DRLs that run in between with a Y-shaped pattern. These new LEDs make the car look much more meaner. The smoked taillamps are all new and the indicators do not flash, but glow in a swiping fashion and it looks classy, to say the least.

The RS7 sportback has a sloping roofline that blends neatly with the tail.. The chiseled rear bumpers have large oval shaped tailpipes that add to the sporty look. Subtly flared wheel arches with 21-inch alloy wheels with a five-spoke blade design, in a glossy black-machined finish, make the car look very different from usual luxury sedans. The fantastic Sepang Blue colour adds some icing to the cake in making it stand out on the road. This is a long car that stands 5012mm in length and 1911mm in width.

The interiors are all-black and also have carbon fibre inlays which are laminated. One has the option of choosing more inlays designs. It feels sporty and elegant at the same time. The facelift gets a larger viewing area for the driver information on the instrument console. A large screen pops up from the centre console as the ignition is switched on. The steering is every sporty with a flat lower portion and is a joy to hold. It comes with sporty leather with pores on it, that provides a better grip. The cabin of the RS7 is luxurious and is a comfortable place to be in both at the front as well as rear. This is a sports sedan that does not compromise on rear seat space.

The RS7 comes with same engine as its earlier version. This unit is a 4.0-litre, V8, twin-turbo, direct injection petrol engine that makes a devastating 560 bhp of power at 5700 rpm and a peak torque of 700Nm. The engine is mated to a an eight-speed automatic tiptronic gearbox. This is not a dual-clutch unit but it powers all four wheels with the Quattro all wheel drive system. All this means the RS7 can reach 0-100 km/h in under 4 seconds and goes from 0-200 in approximately 12 seconds, making it one of the fastest cars around. It is indeed a supercar in a comparatively simpler guise.
Push the start button and the engine fires up with a blip in the exhaust and settles to a deep rumble. Every time you start the car in public places, there will be several heads that will definitely turn. With all that power, the RS7 is surprisingly very easy to drive around at slow speeds and feels comfortable in heavy traffic too. However, come to an open road and the RS7 is mesmerizing when it unleashes itself. The all-round visibility is not bad for a sportback.
The gearbox in the RS7 is a pleasure to use. It has slick shifts when using in manual mode. The S mode is where all the fun lies actually and the car just catapults in a mad way whenever you step on the gas. The lower gears shift quicker than the higher gears to improve driveability. For example, at 200km/h the engine was spinning at 5000 rpm in the sixth gear. This is while in the S mode. Audi claims the RS7 to be fuel efficient and return around 10km/l. During our test the RS7 returned around 6 km/l, however, that was under pedal to metal type driving conditions. Driving with a light foot will return much better figures.
Every time you get a sure-footed feeling and also the urge to push the car even more. Also, despite the 21-inch wheels with lower profile tyres, the ride was far from being uncomfortable. It glides over most surfaces smoothly, except the real bad ones and also offers a flat ride. One can easily sit behind and relax in the plush seats and not worry about ben tossed over unlike in a hard-core sports car.
The car comes equipped with a Bang and Olufsen audio system, start/stop function, a heads-up display, night vision assistance and and adaptive cruise control. In addition, it has rear dual-zone air conditioner, a sunroof, power assisted door closing (in case any door remains half open) and an automatically opening boot lid. In terms of safety, the car comes equipped with eight airbags, ABS with EBD and ASR (Anti-Slip Regulation) There are quite a few options when you spend money on the other side of INR 1 crore. But there are very few cars that can give you that adrenaline rush while being classy and carrying all the luxuries along. The Audi RS7 is one such car that one can seldom get bored of. Actually seldom can you get enough of it. It is an ideal car for those who mainly drive themselves and are driven at times while being pampered like in a luxury sedan. The RS7 Sportback is a beast in a domesticated outfit.
