Mahindra and Mahindra is working on the new-generation Thar to meet with the new upcoming crash test and pollution norms. The current-generation Thar was introduced as a replacement to the companys MM540. To make the vehicle more powerful and lighter, it got the 2.5-litre CRDe engine and the front suspension were independent. But this is still not sufficient to meet the revised crash test norms. The facelift did get some major updates but it is the platform that needed some work.
Mahindra has commenced testing of this new platform, which our sources state is shared with the TUV300 or the new Quanto platform. Mahindra is looking at making multiple products on both these platforms, as there will be a TUV500 and the other platform will get new-generation Quanto and a seven-seater Quanto too. The Mahindra Thar will be sport a 1.5-litre three-cylinder diesel engine that will churn about 100bhp of power and 240Nm of torque. This is the new engine that help Mahindra to reduce its carbon footprint. Mahindra is looking at exporting the new Thar to other markets as this will be a niche product that the company could capitalise on.
The new Thar will be modern, light, fuel-efficient and at the same time it will retain its characteristic of being torquey. The launch is due in 2017-18 and this will be made in the companys Chakan plant itself.
