Yamaha plans to introduce the MT-09 in India in the second half of 2015. This will be the first bike from Yamaha for India, which will be a 850cc. This is also the first triple cylinder engine for Yamaha since the 1970s. We can expect many more triple-cylinder engines from Yamaha in the future, but this will be a great option for Yamaha to commence its entry into the 800cc for the Indian bike market. The Yamaha MT-09 was launched in 2013 in the North American market and since then it has been going strong for Yamaha. The Triumph Triple is more like a street fighter, while the MT-09 is a roadster motard. The Yamaha MT-09 produces 115bhp of power and 88Nm of peak torque. This bike has a fuel tank of 14 litres and can go up to 240kms on a single tank of fuel.
The Yamaha MT-09 is an affordable bike torquey bike that competes with the Triumph Street Triple and Kawasaki Z800. The Yamaha MT-09 produces more power and torque than its competition and at the same time, it even carries a lower price tag too.
In the initial stages the bike will come to India through the CBU route and will be priced at Rs about 7.5 lakhs (on-road, New Delhi). As this bike above 800cc, homologation won't be an issue. Yamaha has already started importing the MT-09 for testing in India and with this pricing, it will have an advantage over the competition. The 800cc segment is fast heating-up, especially with the naked versions. We aren't sure of Yamaha will be introducing the MT-09 Street Tracker as well. Yamaha has also imported the YZ-R3 in India for testing purpose.
