A recent United Nations report has revealed that nearly 12,000 Afghan Taliban fighters have been killed, wounded or captured during the military operations in Afghanistan in 2013.
The UN report said that the violence in the war-torn nation was at a three-year high.
The report submitted to the UN Security Council called for a better regulatory framework for the country's developing mining industry, which produces large quantities of high explosives and detonators, to stop them being misused by the Taliban, the Daily Times reports.
The report also warned that the increasing sophisticated homemade bombs, which accounted for 80 percent of casualties among Afghan security forces, were becoming a major threat to the nation.
Afghan tribal leaders are to meet for a grand assembly or "loya jirga" on Thursday to consider the Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA) that will decide the future of the U.S. troops in the country post-2014 withdrawal of NATO forces.
There are fears that a complete pullout of American forces from Afghanistan could lead to chaos and violence, if local forces are unable to cope with the Taliban.
