Nearly 22 million Egyptians have signed for a campaign, which is trying to remove the Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, even as supporters of the Islamist leader question the authenticity of the collected signatures.

According to news24, the campaign follows protests by Tamarod, with the aim of collecting more signatures than the 13 million votes Morsi had amassed in his victory in the 2012 presidential election.

The leader of the rebel group, Mahmoud Badr said that the movement has already had 22, 134, 460 Egyptians signing for a petition demanding the president's removal, without mentioning whether there had been an audit of the signatures.

Over the past few days, protests have only escalated after the one-year anniversary of Morsi's government, with clashes between supporters and the opposition getting more violent.
