29.8 percent polling till noon in J-K, 53.86 percent till 1p.m. in Jharkhand

Around 29.8 percent polling has been recorded till 1p.m. in 20 assembly constituencies in the fifth and final phase of elections in Jammu and Kashmir.

The polling began on a brisk note amid tight security for the final round of elections in Jammu and Kashmir in which 213 candidates are trying their luck in 20 assembly seats.

The voting, which began at 8 a.m., will end at 4 p.m.

Despite the cold weather, a large number of people came out of their homes to vote in the fifth phase.

"I want to appeal to the young voters that they should vote in the best interest of the country. They should vote for a good leader, who would work for them," said Ajay Lal Sharma, a voter in Jammu.

Meanwhile, 53.86 percent polling has been recorded in Jharkhand till 1 p.m. in the ongoing fifth and final phase of assembly elections.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren is among the 208 candidates whose fates will be decided today. Soren is in fray from Dumka, from where he had been elected in 2009.

In Jharkhand, the polling is underway for 16 constituencies spread over six districts of Dumka, Godda, Sahibganj, Jamtara, Deoghar and Pakud in the Santhal Pargana region.

"The people are excited and everybody should vote because it would lead to development," said Raghvendra Singh, a voter in Dumka.

The Election Commission has made elaborate security arrangements to prevent any untoward incident.
