The 48th Annual Congress of the Indian Society of Nephrology (ISNCON 2017) organized by the Delhi Nephrology Society was inaugurated at Pullman - Novotel Hotel Aerocity in New Delhi.
The first day of the conference on December 14 saw discussions on topics such as overdiagnosis and underdiagnosis of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), among others.
"ISNCON 2017 is going to be an academic fiesta as it brings many masterminds in the field of Nephrology under one roof. Efforts have been made to make the content of this conference comprehensive, so as to make it interesting for both postgraduates and practising nephrologists," said ISNCON Organizing Secretary, Dr. Shyam Bihari Bansal, Director, Nephrology, Kidney and Urology Institute Medanta - the Medicity.
Statistics indicate that 1 in every 10 people in the general population are estimated to have some form of chronic kidney disorder (CKD).
About 175,000 new people have kidney failure (stage V CKD) every year in India and require dialysis and/or kidney transplantation.
It has also been estimated that about 60 percent to 70 percent of CKD cases are due to diabetes and hypertension.
More From This Section
CKD takes about 10 to 15 years to set in and therefore; it is imperative to take preventive measures at the earliest. Not doing so can lead to kidney failure, which can only be managed in two ways, dialysis and transplant, which many Indians cannot afford.
This conference aims at discussing all this and more.
"CKD is a silent killer and when poorly managed, it can increase the risk of heart disease and often kidney failure. The majority of chronic kidney failure patients are diagnosed in the last stage. Many other forms of kidney disorders exist which can affect even pregnant women. This conference is extremely important in the research being carried out in this area. Through this knowledge sharing platform, we can tackle the growing CKD menace and create awareness among a larger section of the society," said Dr Sanjeev Saxena, Senior Consultant and Head of the Nephrology Department PSRI Hospital.
ISNCON 2017 will attract clinical nephrologists and researchers working in the arena of kidney diseases.
The scientific programme incorporates a wide range of pre-conference CME, invited contributions, free paper communications, plenary lectures, symposia, poster sessions and orations and clinic-Pathological session.
