A survey has revealed that 3 percent of America's population, comprising the ultra-rich, held 54.4 percent of all net worth in 2013.

The figures have jumped from 51.8 percent in 2007 and 44.8 percent in 1989, reported Huffington Post. The survey was conducted by the Federal Reserve every three years and showed on Thursday that the gap between the richest Americans and the rest of the nation widened after the Great Recession.

The report also said that although the incomes of the highest-earners rose yet none of the groups who were surveyed were able to regain their 2007 income by 2013 suggesting the aftereffects of the recession.

From 2010 to 2013, the average income of American families grew by a miserly four percent after accounting for inflation, the survey showed.

Terming the deepening income inequality a "disturbing trend," Fed Chairperson Janet Yellen attributed it to the weak job market along with other underlying trends like technology and globalization.
