At least 60 Taliban insurgents were killed and 20 others were wounded after Afghan National Defense and Security Forces retaliated the attacks launched by the Taliban insurgents in northern Faryab province.

As per Tolo News report, the 209th Shaheen Corps of the Afghan National Army in the North said a number of the key Taliban leaders, including the shadow district chief of the group for Ghormach identified as Mawlavi Amrullah, were among those killed.

Afghan security forces have also destroyed at least 19 vehicles and motorcycles used by the militants.

"At least one hundred Taliban insurgents were killed or wounded during the operations which were supported by the Afghan Air Force," lawmaker representing Faryab in the lower house of the parliament Bashir Ahmad Tahyanj said.

Taliban insurgents have not commented so far.

Earlier, Taliban had seized control of Faryab province. The officials in the districts had appealed for reinforcements and for special force in order to drive back the insurgents.

The Taliban overran Kohistan district in northern Faryab province after storming the district government's headquarters - which houses the police headquarters - late Saturday night, Abdul Karim Yourish, a provincial police spokesman said.
