At least eight people were killed after a three-storey building housing an educational institution collapsed here on Wednesday.
Thirty-seven people, including six children, were pulled out from the rubble by rescue workers in Ita-faaji area of Lagos Island, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) southwest region spokesperson Ibrahimi Farinloye was quoted by CNN as saying.
Lagos State governor Akinwunmi Ambode, who visited the site, said that many school students and residents are feared trapped in the building.
He added that the school and shops in the now-collapsed building were not authorised and hence, they were operating "illegally".
The building was meant for residential purposes, Ambode informed.
Rescue operations are underway at the building, which included commercial shops at the base, a school on the second floor and houses at the top.
Further details are awaited.
