At least nine people have been reportedly killed and nearly 50 people have been injured in a fire at a Bangladeshi clothing factory.

According to the BBC, the fire broke out late on Tuesday in Gazipur, near Dhaka and the emergency officials said that the death toll could rise.

The cause of the fire was not clear, but it is said to have broken out at a knitting section of Aswad Composite Mills, the report added.

Officials said the blaze escalated and continued for several hours due to water shortage and non-availability of close-by fire stations.

Factory Director Emdad Hossain said that 170 workers, who had been working overtime, were on the two floors of the factory, when the fire broke out.

Safety standards in Bangladesh's garment factories have been reportedly poor from past many years.
