Senior advocate and women rights activist Abha Singh on Sunday criticised the Uttar Pradesh police for their inability to protect a rape victim, who was shot dead by unidentified bike-borne men in Mau and accused the state government of giving political patronage to the criminals.

"When she was a witness and there was a danger to her life, why did the local police not give her protection? Witnesses need to be protected and the killing of a witness shows that there is no law and order in UP, " Singh told ANI.

"There is no fear of law in UP, and that is the reason that a rape victim was blatantly shot dead outside the court," she added.

A rape victim was shot dead by unidentified bike-borne men earlier today in Baijapur village of Mau district.

The victim had to appear before the court after 2 days, in connection with a 2011 rape-case.

The accused in the case are the manager of the college where the victim studied and other un-identified men.
