Afghan CEO assures support for 'press freedom'

Asserting that Afghans have always fought for freedom of the press even when some people, parties and governments tried to silence their voices, CEO Abdullah Abdullah on Tuesday thanked the media for being the voice of the nation.

In a series of tweets, Tolo News mentioned CEO Abdullah Abdullah marking 'World Press Freedom Day' at event in Kabul.

"Afghans fought for #PressFreedom even when some people, parties and governments tried to silence the voices. I would like to tell media we are united, we are one nation, one voice & one group. You are the voice of our nation. I thank you!," he said.

Praising the media the CEO said that Afghan media outlets were front runners in achieving this freedom.

"Abdullah states attaining #PressFreedom 'was a long struggle We sacrificed for this and we finally have it. I congratulate Afghans for this," Afghan CEO said.

He, however, threw light on the problems faced by media outlets by the anti-state groups.

"We have come a long way but, there are still problems challenging us. We have recently witnessed attacks on media in #Afghanistan. : Latest attack was on #TOLOnews. It was a horrible attack which can not be justified. There were similar attacks earlier" he said.

Abdullah Abdullah assured that Afghan government was committed in supporting the media and Press Freedom.

" #Afghan media has always been voice for those with no voice. Media has worked to tell the problems and needs of the communities. Media is a bridge between people & govt in #Afghanistan. They have always held us accountable and this is a good progress we made, " he said.

He also assured the Media that the government supports their independence and said that noone in the government had the right to interfere in their work.

Abdullah Abdullah informed that the government will be working to award the Afghan media for their work and tireless efforts throughout the last decade and that they are honorable.

Conveying that Afghans expect media to support national interests of country, he urged media to avoid publishing wrong information that destroys the country.

"Our country is facing so many problems today. Media should prioritize national interests and defy terror against the #Afghans," he said.

The Afghan CEO requested analysts to have national interests at the top of their agenda and work and speak for the people and for the country.
