An American Navy ship involved in the search operation to locate the wreckage of an AirAsia plane that crashed into the Java Sea last week has found two metal objects on the seabed, Indonesia's rescue chief said.

Bambang Sulistyo however, said on Tuesday that it is yet to be confirmed if the two metal objects are parts of the aircraft, reported News 24.

He said that the weather conditions had improved but the divers attempting to corroborate the finding came back empty handed because of the strong currents.

Sulistyo said that the operation focuses on retrieving as many bodies as possible and added that the team believes that some of the victims are still trapped in the main body of the aircraft.

He said that two more bodies were found floating in the sea, bringing the confirmed death toll to 39.

Only 16 bodies have been identified so far after the aircraft went down during a flight from Surabaya to Singapore on 28 December with 162 people on board.
