The Selection Committee of All India Tennis Association (AITA) held a meeting on Thursday in light of the selection of players for the Davis Cup and the Women's Team for the Asian Games.
The meeting was chaired by Anil Dhupar and attended by Balram Singh and Zeeshan Ali. The chairman took up the selection of the Davis Cup for the tie against Serbia and mentioned that six players were selected for the Asian Games.
Dhupar said that Sanam Singh was preferred against few higher ranked players on account of the fact that he is a former gold medallist and is also concentrating on higher-level tournaments.
Ali stated that captain of the Davis Cup team Anand Amritraj had also suggested that since Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi are not playing in the Davis Cup he preferred to use the same combination of players, Somdev Devvarman, Yuki Bhambri, Rohan Bopanna and Saketh Myneni.
The selectors have named Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Ramkumar Ramanathan as the two reserves for the Davis Cup squad.
Meanwhile, for the women's team for the Asian Games the selection committee has included Sweta Rana as the sixth player for the team and Snehadevi Reddy as the reserve.
The committee also recommended Hemant Bendre as the coach for the women's team.
