Legendary Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram has been roped in as Sri Lanka's mentor for next month's gruelling tour of South Africa.

While confirming the news, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) revealed Akram would conduct a day-long coaching clinic for the players in Colombo today.

"We are honoured that Akram has accepted our invitation to be a part of this initiative," the Express Tribune quoted SLC chief Thilanga Sumathipala as saying.

Sumathipala further said 2019 World Cup could be within Sri Lanka's grasp if the side is provided with the right guidance.

Sri Lanka clinched the World Cup trophy in 1996, but were choked twice in the finals of the 2007 and 2011 editions.

Considered as one of the best pacers ever to grace the game, Akram bagged a total of 414 Test wickets and 502 scalps in 356 ODIs.

Sri Lanka are scheduled to play three-match Test series, three T20Is and five ODIs beginning at St. George's Oval on December 26.
