Somalia's al Qaeda linked militant group al Shabaab has said that they attacked the African Union military base on Thursday as revenge for the United States airstrike that killed their leader Ahmed Godane in September.

The group's spokesman Ali Dheere said on Andalus radio,a pro-Al-Shabaab broadcaster that the militant group launched the AU military base attack to avenge their leader's death, reported CNN.

According to the African Union Mission in Somalia, Seven Al-Shabaab militants died after they attacked Somalia's largest base for African Union troops.

Three AU soldiers and a civilian also died in the attack while two militants in a car detonated themselves inside the Halane Military base in Mogadishu.
